The AIS R&D Firmware Engineer Intern will assist in designing and developing implant products for the Active Implantable Systems group, focusing on firmware design, software development, and collaboration with engineering teams.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to develop tools and software solutions that support implantable cardiac device development
Contribute to embedded firmware design and implementation for Active Implantable Systems (AIS) technologies
Develop and maintain software using C++, C#, and Python to support diagnostics, monitoring, and treatment workflows
Support wireless communication features - including Bluetooth and socket programming - for real-time data exchange and device connectivity
Engage in cybersecurity-focused development to ensure patient safety and data integrity across AIS platforms
Contribute to projects that explore the use of artificial intelligence in medical device applications
Take initiative in identifying and solving technical challenges related to device functionality, data flow, and system integration
Support innovation efforts that advance AIS therapies across the continuum of care
Ensure engineering solutions align with clinical needs, regulatory standards, and patient safety requirements
Participate in Agile development processes
Qualification
Required
Current rising junior or rising senior (grad dates between Dec 2026 - May 2028), graduating senior (May 2026 grad) continuing on to grad school, or current grad student. Must have at least one semester of school left post-internship to qualify
Working towards a Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering (with software skills)
Must be able to start internship on May 18th or 26th, 2026 and work for 12 weeks
Must have reliable transportation to/from work
Experience with Python, C, C++, and C#
Familiar with Agile methodologies
Preferred
Rising senior or Masters student
Medical industry experience
Experience with embedded firmware projects that involve wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth in school or work projects
Experience developing or supporting multithreaded applications or using socket programming in school or work projects
Experience with projects involving cybersecurity or the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a school or work setting
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse, cross-functional teams
Passion to learn new technologies and find new solutions
