Coherent Corp. is a global leader in lasers and engineered materials, and they are seeking a motivated Data Scientist Intern to join their SiC Data Systems team for Summer 2026. The intern will gain hands-on experience in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applications in manufacturing, contributing to projects that support the large-scale manufacturing of next-generation semiconductor materials.
Responsibilities
Projects will be in LLM implementation (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) or machine-learning-based defect classification
Guided ownership of entire project pipeline: problem identification, process discovery, solution design, and implementation
Key skills involved include dataset construction, model training & validation, semantic layer engineering
Close collaboration with software engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders
By the end of the internship, a prototype of the selected project is expected
Qualification
Required
Currently enrolled students or those who have graduated within one year of the internship start date
Pending bachelor's degree (rising senior) at minimum
Majors: Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or other related STEM fields
Must be US citizen or permanent resident
Proficiency in AI model training or LLM context engineering
Familiarity with Python-based data science ecosystem
Sound understanding of foundations of AI/ML technologies
Excellent written and verbal communication
Team-oriented but able to work independently when needed
Adaptable and eager to learn in a fast-paced environment
Attention to detail and time management
Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, or protected individual)
Compliance with all applicable export control regulations
Preferred
Pending master's or doctoral degree is beneficial
Relevant coursework or extracurricular experience in material science or manufacturing is a plus
